Who is Laurance Royston from A Test of Wills and what is their importance?

Royston is the steward on Harris' estate. He has been working on the estate for many years. Over the course of the novel, we learn that Royston was once involved in a car accident, in which a small child was killed. He has never forgiven himself for the incident.
