Who is Melisandre from A Storm of Swords and what is their importance?

Melisandre, the Red Woman, is a priestess of R'hllor, the Lord of the Light. She is religious advisor to Stannis, and predicts a great war is coming. She wants to sacrifice Edric Storm so Stannis can become the hero of the war, but Davos helps Edric escape.
