The shoebox Bex hides her mementoes of Hugh’s birth in represent hiding away the past. Bex has kept the truth of being Hugh’s mother a secret for 40 years. She allows herself to face the truth only once a year on Hugh’s birthday when she brings out the shoebox and looks at the items in it.
