Bex had a hiding spot in the closet of her studio. There, she kept a shoebox that held a small blue cotton hat, a hospital bracelet that said "Baby Boy McElroy" (348), and a photograph. Bex had been 14 when she got pregnant with Hugh. Her mother persuaded her not to have an abortion and to allow her and Bex's father to raise the baby as their own.
