Why will Sylvie not allow Lily to serve at Byron's going-away party?

Sylvie will not allow Lily to serve at Byron's going-away party. Lily does not have the property respect for class and gentility. She does not know how to serve quietly, pleasantly, and invisibly. No amount of beating or coaching would change her demeanor so it would be acceptable.
