Sylvie knows that Blacks and mixed bloods die of yellow fever just as her daughter did. She knows that their mothers cry for their losses. Those losses to Sylvie, though, are only notations in a ledger. The weeping of the Black or mixed-blood family members who suffered losses due to yellow fever are no more than the howls of animals to her.
