What do you think Félicité means when she says of Victor's death that "'It doesn't matter a bit, not to them it doesn't'"?

Félicité is feeling extremely upset about Victor's death, but she attempts to control her emotions and go on with her work. Perhaps when she says it doesn't matter to them, she means to tell herself that she has to deal with this loss as she has always dealt with loss: by herself. She knows that she can't expect any real sympathy from anyone. There does, however, seem to be a bit of bitterness in this remark that hasn't been seen before. It seems like she wishes that someone could care about her the way she is able to care for everyone else.
