It is significant that the parrot is being eaten by maggots in several ways. First, the parrot, as a symbol of the Holy Spirit may also represent religion in general. Thus the image may be a general image about the corruption of religion and Félicité's ignorance and ability to see past the corruption into the heart of it, suggests the continued possibility of true spirituality or true religious experience in the modern world. In a more particular sense, Félicité's love for the parrot despite it's grotesque condition is another marker of her unconditional love.
