The Holy Spirit is described to Félicité as a bird, a fire, and sometimes a breath. She struggles to conceive how one thing or one being can take so many forms and be so many things at the same time, but she is clearly fascinated by it and begins to see the Holy Spirit in the mists over the ocean and the wind, among other things. She seems to imagine the Holy Spirit as a spirit of beauty that exists corporeally in the world around her and thus enhances what she sees and experiences.
