Mme. Aubain and Virginie react quite differently when Virginie leaves for boarding school. Both of them feel sad, but they react in very different ways. Mme. Aubain tries to divert her attention by inviting guests to her house to take her mind off of Virginie and then learns to rely on receiving and writing letters almost every day. Félicité is unable to distract herself from her sadness at first and ends up losing sleep and standing in Virginie's room looking at the walls. Finally, she invites her nephew over and, somewhat like Mme. Aubain, she is able to distract herself with a new person. However, Felicite's distraction seems to be more of a transfer of affection than a distraction from it because Victor becomes a new and powerful object of her love and affection.
