After Virginie dies, Mme. Aubain is completely distraught. She can do nothing for herself or anyone. We don't learn about Felicite's response until, after a span of several months, Felicite finally admonishes Mme. Aubain for forgetting about her son in the midst of her grief for her daughter. We then learn that Felicite has been to Virginie's grave every day tending the flowers and generally taking care of it. As usual, Felicite is enough the master of her feelings to carry on with her responsibilities and to do the right thing.
