Once Félicité begins working for Mme. Aubain, she is described as deflecting tradespeople who want Mme. Aubain to buy things and takes care to both take care of Mme. Aubain's poor uncle and protect her from him. Mme. Aubain clearly yields to Félicité's protection in these ways and, since we have already learned that she spends all day sitting in a rocking chair looking out the window, it seems that she needs this protection. Mme. Aubain comes across as a woman who, perhaps in grief after her husband's death, cannot take care of herself and is not particularly good at managing her own household.
