Félicité was dismissed from her first job after being accused of stealing. This is ironic in two senses. First, it's ironic that she would be dismissed for stealing after we have just been introduced to her as a servant who is genuinely concerned about the well-being of Mme. Aubain, her employer. In Mme. Aubain's service, she is adamant to get the lowest price for anything she buys, thus actually saving her money. Furthermore, as with the loaf of bread that lasts her twelve days, she never wastes anything that she receives. It is therefore ironic that someone so frugal and honest would be accused of stealing, a thing so opposite her actual virtues. It is also ironic that she would be fired unfairly from that job because her employer treated her so poorly, giving her insufficient clothing and actually beating her. It is ironic that she would be the one told to leave in a situation like that.
