Although it is somewhat ambiguous, it seems that Victor really does care about Felicite. His parents urge him to take what he can from her and so he does, somewhat dutifully, bring her his mending, eat as much as he can, and take little things home with him. On the other hand, when he takes trips, he always brings her something back, too. When he's visiting, the narrator tells us that he entertains her with stories about his adventures and he really seems very good-natured for doing this. Certainly he is bringing her real pleasure and that he thinks to give her small gifts somewhat mitigates the impression that is only out to take from her. It shows a thoughtfulness and a desire to make her feel a return of his love that is convincing.
