When Félicité tells Mme. Aubain that she hasn't heard from Victor in six months, she does it with the intention of comforting her. Mme. Aubain hasn't heard from her daughter in four days and is consequently worried about her. Félicité tries to sympathize with her and comfort her by telling her that she hasn't heard from her nephew in much longer. Mme. Aubain, however, fails to really see or acknowledge the connection. In fact, at first she doesn't even know who Félicité is referring to. This is reminiscent of the time when Félicité's sister came to visit her and Mme. Aubain disregarded the importance of it by only allowing her to visit for fifteen minutes. In both instances, Mme. Aubain fails to recognize the value and even existence of her servant's feelings.
