Why was the Hallicraft S-40B so important to Tully?

The Hallicrafter S-40B was Tully's father's most prized possession that brought the sounds of the world to his small patch of Wyoming. After his father dies in an avalanche when Tully is a boy, he spends a lot of time and effort trying to see if he can hear his father through the radio.
