Why do the people of Dalvalo worship pilots?

Willie shows up on the eve of Captain Keed Day when the inhabitants of Dalvalo celebrate the pilot from Florida coming to their island as prophesied. Captain Keed's plane fell out of the sky during a volcano eruption and the islanders worshiped him like a god.
