This first chapter lays the groundwork for development of the narrative's key elements. Most can be interpreted as conflict between conventional views, which are portrayed as restricting full and honest expression of emotion, and unconventional views, portrayed as open, unexpected, vulnerable and ultimately more humanist expressions of genuine feeling. This tension is at the core of almost all relationships and events of the novel.
