If Ralston tries to amputate his arm on day one or two, he is not yet dehydrated. His blood flow and blood pressure is close to normal, with a consequence of bleeding out more easily. Over more time, dehydration and decomposition sets in, and the arteries and veins are close to shutting off in the amputated area. Also, Ralston's blood viscosity thickens and runs slower, giving Ralston more time to hike out and find others, once he amputates his arm.
