While growing up in the midwest, Ralston thinks of the outdoors as woods but not mountains. When the notion of moving to Colorado comes up, he is nervous and afraid. Once he arrives, Ralston overcomes his fear becomes an avid outdoorsman, participating in activities that include rock climbing, rafting, ice climbing, mountain biking, and more.
