Ralston is a technical, rational person who is not spiritual. However, in his current situation he is tested and prays for guidance. He wonders if there is a lesson to all this and tries to figure out what it is. He half-heartedly looks for a sign of an epiphany. Since he does not really get it and never really expected to, he jokingly decides to pray to the devil instead. To him, he gives his soul and gives up climbing if he can get out.
