Amputation is an option from the beginning. However, when he starts to consider it more deeply , he realizes there are many challenges to this. Cutting through an artery can cause severe damage for the rest of the body. Even if Ralston cuts through his flesh and stops the bleeding well enough, he knows the knife is not sharp enough to cut through bone. If Ralston does not think it through, he may cut halfway only to find that he cannot finish the job.
