The story is told mostly through exposition with patches of dialogue scattered throughout the book. Cather takes a mostly expository form because of her extensive, but beautiful, descriptions of the characters and places that appear in the novel. For the most part, the timeline of the novel is linear. It is only the first chapter that breaks this timeline.
