Why does the sheriff refer to the lady as Mrs.. Peters in A Jury of Her Peers?

The sheriff is alluding to Mrs. Peters' position as his wife. The is an example of gender roles, as Mrs. Peters is only seen in her role as wife..... it's as if she doesn't have an identity of her own.
