What happens to Gikonyo the day he is released from the concentration camp?

When Gikonyo is released from the concentration camp, he rushes home to his hut where he finds his mother, Mumbi, and a child. He knows that Mumbi had the child with another man, and his mother blurts out the baby is Karanja's, his enemy.
