What is the author's tone in A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor?

There is a cynicism to O'Connor's writing that inhabits her characters. Grandma is in many respects no less sympathetic as the Misfit. There is a darkness of tone that seems to bring the worst out in her characters. The reader might well look for at least one character to lighten up the tone a little.
