Why does Lord Eddard allow Jon Snow to join the Night Watch?

Lord Eddard allows Jon to join the Night Watch because Lady Catelyn wants him gone from Winterfell. It is also possible that Jon can attain a high rank within the Night Watch which could bring honor to them.
