What kills Khal Drogo?

After being injured, Drogo's wound festers, and he loses the ability to ride his horse. As a result, Daenerys sacrifices their unborn child for a spell to revive him. The spell works, but leaves him a vegetable. Daenerys smothers him to death in order to end his indignity.
