How did having a New Year's party at Tom's become a ritual?

The first year that Tom came to the island the others had a party on the beach. It started to rain, so they fled to Tom's place because it was the closest. It was the best party they every had and lasted until dawn. After that, it became a tradition to have New Year's part at Tom's.
