At the end of Chapter 15, why will Tom not read Anna's letter to Fran, and why does he think the letter is okay?

Tom tells Anna that he will not read the letter that she wrote to Fran responding to the information that her husband has been having affairs. He tells Anna that he knows the letter will be what Fran needs from her friend. He knows because of the look on Anna's face. It is soft.
