At the end of the chapter, why is Alex leading his friends to "his doom?"

Alex is leading his friends to his doom because, as the novel foreshadows, Alex is going to be called to account for his crimes by either his friends, who will abandon him, the police, or both. Something bad is definitely going to happen to Alex.
