Brienne Tarth from A Clash of Kings is an almost tragic character in this novel. She is a largely built woman and she does not fit into typical gowns and frilly laces like most women. She can, however, hold a sword and fight as good as a man. She proves this by winning many tournaments. But it does not win her any friends. She ends up being the embarrassment to her family, no knights want to be her friend, and women thing she is an abomination...except Catelyn Stark. Lady Stark speaks up for her when Brienne is accused of killing Renly. Brienne wouldn't have killed Renly....she was in love with him.
