Peter explains to John that he had already performed three abortions on his niece when she requested another. By then, Peter had come to the conclusion that psychologically, Karen had wanted the shame of an illegitimate birth in order to punish herself and her well-established family. For this reason, he decided to refuse to perform another abortion.
