Who is Alan Zenner, and why does John talk with him?

Alan Zenner is one of Karen's friends whom John tracks down from a photo retrieved from her dorm room. John speaks with him to learn more about Karen. Alan says that Karen had a bad reputation. He mentions Angela, a name John had heard before from another of Karen's friends. The last time Alan had seen Karen, she had said she was pregnant and was planning to have an abortion.
