Who is Lloyd from A Map of the World and what is their importance?

Lloyd is an old friend of Howard Goodwin. He makes the neighbors nervous with his dread locks and unkempt appearance. After he spends a few months with the Goodwins helping with work on the farm, their neighbors take to avoiding them.
