Who is Aunt Kate from A Map of the World and what is their importance?

Though not a blood relation, Aunt Kate is a close friend of Alice's mother who comes home from Stockholm when she learns Alice's mother is dying. Alice's mother's last wish is that Kate will take over the care of her only daughter. The summer before Alice leaves for college, Kate suffers a heart attack and dies.
