HAL 9000 is an artificially computer originally designed by Dr. Chandra to assist the crew of the original Discovery. In 2000 AD, Discovery undertook a journey to Jupiter, but Hal malfunctioned, killing most of the crew, and the nature of his malfunction remains a mystery until Chandra determines that Hal was given a set of paradoxical orders that caused the computer to develop symptoms similar to human paranoia. Once reactivated by his creator, Hal is compliant and helpful, though does express a desire to remain in human company when Leonov leaves Jupiter's orbit. Though Discovery is destroyed by Jupiter's transformation into a star, Hal is transformed and preserved by David Bowman.
