Who is The Taxi Driver from 1Q84 and what is their importance?

Although he is only a minor character in the novel, the taxi driver is crucial to the plot. He warns Aomame that things are not as they appear, and informs her as to the whereabouts of an emergency stairwell she can use to beat the traffic. The taxi driver's suggestion is directly responsible for Aomame transport to 1Q84.
