Johnson uses detailed imagery to describe the many settings Ginny visits over the course of the novel. The freedom and relaxing environment found in Edinburgh, over crowded streets of London.... the cobbled streets, cafes, pillars, domes, sculptures, and fountains of Rome, and the canals that serve as a direct route from Amsterdam to Copenhagen. In essence, the author paints a picture of Europe that allows the reader to follow in Ginny's footsteps without ever leaving their armchair.
