Simon is Golding's Christ-figure. He is trying to find peace in the midst of escalating antagonism between Ralph and Jack. At one point in the story, Ralph and Jack argue about who might hike down the mountain to inform Piggy. All the boy’s shudder at the prospect of entering the jungle at night. It is Simon that cheerfully goes into the jungle and stops the argument. Simon knows that the only fear is within the boys themselves.
