From the story "The Lottery" written by Shirley Jackson how does the lottery in the same and different from the lotteries that we are familiar with?

The lottery is similar in the way that people take a chance on being randomly picked for a specific outcome. Of course in in the story version the "winning" is not desirable where as today's lotteries, winning is desirable.
