In Chapter 29, we learn that McMurphy has been lobotomized. Knowing that McMurphy wouldn't want to be left there as he is, a permanent sign to anyone of what happens when you try to buck the system, Bromden muffles the lobotomized McMurphy under a pillow and suffocates him.
