Why does Lizabeth get so upset by her father's tears and her mother's strength?

Elizabeth has never seen her father cry. He is supposed to be the strong one, and when she sees him sobbing uncontrollably, she also sees her mother's strength (which she had never considered). Witnessing this reversal of roles rocks her world and takes her out of her comfort zone.
