In essence, yes, Emma's unhappiness and discontent are her own fault. She marries Charles to be comfortable, but her materialistic side isn't gratified. She becomes bored with her husband sexually, so she indulges in affairs, all of which eventually disappoint her. Emma wants luxury, she wants a to exist in a constant state of romance. Her affairs, however, cannot live up to the expectations. In the end, nothing can excite her... make her life worth living, so she chooses to end it.
