In Chapter Four, we learn that Stephen has completely devoted himself to God. Because he has little to confess, the priest asks him to name old sins, sins that are humiliating to confess.This leaves Stephen feeling uncomfortable, as he feels that feelings of guilt will always be with him and that he will never truly be absolved.
